I'm a Little Closer to Heaven

Welcome to Una Vida



The Chacoan Culture, located in Northwest New Mexico contains the ruins of the Chaco's ancient architecture. At the beginning of the park lies the Una Vida ("One Life" named after Lt. James Simpson and his Mexican guide Carravahal in 1849 during a military expedition into Navajo territory).  The canyon itself leads into the famous Pueblo Bonito, the ancient home to, of course, the Pueblan natives--others who have passed through this city and made it their home as well--Hopi and Navajo--all combined to share with us, today, a complete Chacoan culture.  I have had the pleasure of visiting this reserve my very first day spent in the Midwest.  And what a journey it was my first day here: discovering what my high school textbooks never talk about and what a college essay could not thoroughly describe without a first hand take on this beautiful land.
